Iran - de dreigende oorlog?

Elke maandag organiseert het Broeinest informatie-bijeenkomsten in de Plantage Doklaan 12 in Amsterdam. Ons doel is om op die avond niet alleen informatie naar buiten te brengen, maar ook een plek te creëren waar mensen elkaar kunnen ontmoeten en plannen kunnen maken om wat te ondernemen. We nodigen u hierbij van harte uit om op 12 juni met ons over de dreigende oorlog in Iran te discussiëren en te bedenken wat voor actie er tegen georganiseerd kan worden. We hebben sprekers van Amok, TNI en de campagne Geen Oorlog Tegen Iran uitgenogd om de volgende vragen te helpen beantwoorden:
Hoe onafwendbaar is de dreigende aanval op Iran? Wat klopt er van de beschuldigingen van westerse landen dat Iran aan atoomwapens werkt en is dat eigenlijk wel illegaal volgens internationale wetgeving? Welke scenario's vallen te verwachten voor de komende tijd en welke initiatieven kunnen er genomen worden om escalatie te voorkomen? Deskundigen geven informatie en beantwoorden vragen.

Een tweede deel van de avond willen we, mede met dezelfde deskundigen, besteden aan wat heikele punten wat betreft de positiebepaling in dit dreigende conflict. Dat we een militaire aanval afwijzen zal logisch zijn. Maar is het ook mogelijk om dat te doen zonder te worden gedwongen om absoluut de kant van het Iraanse regime te kiezen? Met andere woorden; is er een campagne mogelijk waarbij ook de onderdrukte situatie van de Iraanse bevolking aan bod komt? Welke alternatieven zijn er?
Als derde onderdeel willen we nader ingaan op de lessen die we kunnen leren van de activiteiten tegen de oorlog tegen Irak. Want ondanks de omvang van de anti-oorlogsbeweging is die niet geslaagd om de oorlog te stoppen. Is er een betere strategie denkbaar?
Desgewenst plannen we over deze kwestie een vervolgavond aan het eind van de bijeenkomst.

Iran: the threat of war?

Every Monday, the Broeinest organises political info-nights at the Plantage Doklaan 12 (near the Artis zoo), in Amsterdam. The aim of this initiative is not only to provide information and analysis, but also to create a space where people can meet, exchange ideas and start off new initiatives for social change. We hereby invite you to join us on Monday 12 June to discuss the topical issue of Iran and the threat of war. We have invited speakers from Amok, TNI and the campaign 'No War Against Iran' to tackle the following questions:
How real is the threat of an attack on Iran? What is true about the allegations that Iran is working on nuclear weapons, and in how far is this illegal under international law? What can we expect to happen in the next year, and what action can we take to prevent an escalation? We will try to answer these and other questions, together with:

The second part of this evening will focus on the sensitive questions of where one should (or not) position oneself in the debate. For most of us, it might be self-evident to reject war whole-sale. But is it possible to retain an anti-war stance without being pushed into the position of supporting the Iranian regime? In other words: is it possible to follow an anti-war campaign that also denounces repressive regimes, or even supports progressive resistance in Iran? What are the alternatives?
As a third element to this thematic debate, we would like to see a discussion evolve on the lessons we learnt from the war against Iraq and the global, yet unsuccessful, resistance that followed. Despite the large-scale and wide geographical spread of the anti-war movement, it was not successful in preventing the war in or the ongoing occupation of Iraq. Can we think of a better strategy? If there is not no time but enough interest, we can plan a follow-up evening on the spot.
